Panevėžys is the fifth largest city in Lithuania.It is a crossroad for the main national roads, the highway VIA BALTICA runs through it. Railway lines provide good transportation facilities, the narrow gauge railway is used for tourism.
It is halfway between the two Baltic capitals- Vilnius and Riga. The distance to the ice-free sea port is 225 km. A favourable geographical position provided good possibilities for many companies to be established in the city.
In 2009 the GDP of Panevėžys County made 5,9 % of the total national GDP. Comparing with 2008 the GDP of Panevėžys County decreased 18 % .
For 2010 there were 3 373 functioning companies. The largest part is covered by wholesale and retail traders(957), industry(394), construction (219), transport and storage (256), real estate and rent (571) sectors.
Small and medium business prevail in Panevėžys.
Over 40 000 people work in the companies of Panevėžys. Food industry (beer, milk and meat products, flour) takes the biggest part (29 %) in the production of Panevėžys industry.
Export is mainly directed to Europe, Asia and NIS. The General City Export equals 6 per cent of the total Lithuanian export.
2,6 % of the total foreign capital invested in Lithuania was shared by the companies of Panevėžys. The biggest countries investors are: Denmark, Finland, Germany, Poland, Estonia and Norway. Norwegian Industry park, the only in Lithuania, is rather successful in Panevėžys. The biggest part of investments are directed to the industry of processing, wholesale and retail trade, real estate and rent in Panevėžys.
Anchoring of big investors and the development of activities in Panevėžys should stimulate the new investors to choose Panevėžys. The city proposes diligent and well educated people able to work in the fields of production, construction, trade, management, etc.
The Municipality of Panevėžys provides tax allowances for the rent of state land, land and real estate property for starting companies and for already existing.
